It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Retired Fire Chief Zelmar C. Greenway.
Rescue 9-A responded to his bedside at the Arbor Oaks Nursing Home on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 08:48 a.m. and found Chief Greenway in cardiac arrest. He was transported to St. Petersburg General Hospital where he was admitted to the ICU in critical condition. On Monday, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Chief Greenway's family made the tough decision to take him off Life Support after the results of CAT scans and MRI's of the brain. A short time later Chief Greenway passed away with his family at his bedside.
Most of our personnel never had the opportunity to work with Chief Greenway, he began his employment with St. Petersburg Fire Department on February 16, 1946, promoted to Fire Chief in 1962 and retired on January 1,1981 as the Fire Chief. Chief Greenway is the uncle to Firefighter / Paramedic Frank Thomas of Station 12-C and also grandfather to Lt. Matt Brown of the Lakeland Fire Department.
Funeral arrangements are as follows:
On Thursday, January 22, the viewing will be from 1 - 2 pm at R. Lee Williams Funeral Home (3530 49 Street North) with a service following at 2 pm. The service will conclude at the graveside in Memorial Gardens.
Please keep the Greenway family in your thoughts and prayers as they grieve the loss of a loved one.
